Bega Day

Am vrea sa multumim (e drept cu o oarecare intarziere) tuturor celor care au participat la Bega Day pe data de 5 iunie. In ciuda ploii, evenimentul a reusit sa reuneasca oameni diferiti dispusi sa contribuie la reabilitarea Canalului Bega. Participantii au avut un rol emblematic, in fond, devreme ce au contribuit la constientizarea importantei apei in oras, dar si a responsabilitatii pe care o au cetatenii in conservarea acestui bun.

Rezultatele workshop-urilor de urbanism au fost extrem de interesante. Nu numai munca tehnica, dar si prezentarea conceptelor au impresionat participantii la eveniment, vizitatorii straini si personalitatile oficiale de la Primaria Timisoara si de la diferitele Universitati. Cu tineri asa talentati, viitorul planificarii de arhitectura si urbanism pare promitator.

In final ultimul cuvant despre Bega Day, il avem de la unul dintre organizatori: "Ma plimb pe malul Begai, privind apusul de soare, gandindu-ma la ziua care a trecut. In fiecare loc exista ceva care imi aminteste de oamenii minunati care au participat la eveniment: copacul unde tiroliana a fost "aruncata" peste Bega, locul unde studentii de la facultatea de chimie au facut demonstratii pentru toti trecatorii, treptele unde o echipa de la Arhitectura a muncit toata ziua. Vad o sticla din plastic langa trotuar; de obice as lasa-o acolo, dar azi, de Ziua Mondiala a Mediului, iau sticla si o arunc in cosul de gunoi. Ma intorc inapoi la Bega, jucandu-mi rolul la imbunatatirea canalului. Ma gandesc cum sa prezervam atmosfera incredibila pe care am vazut-o aici. Ma gandesc la viitoarele evenimentele care sa continue munca inceputa azi. Ma gandesc cat de norocoasa este Timisoara sa aiba un grup de oameni carora le pasa de viitorul orasului. Si ma gandesc ca, pana la urma, vom reusi sa ne atingem scopul, pentru ca, la Timisoara, fiecare zi este Bega Day.

We here at the Bega Blog would like to extend our belated thanks to all those who came out and participated in Bega Day on June 5. Despite the threat of rain, the event succeeded in bringing together a diverse range of people who are interested in working to improve the Bega Canal for the citizens of Timisoara. Everybody who participated in the event helped to raise awareness of both the importance of the Bega to Timisoara and the responsibility of Timisoara's citizens to preserve and plan for the future of this resource.

The results of the planning and design workshops were particularly impressive. Not only the technical work, but the presentation of the concepts impressed the event participants, foreign visitors, as well as officials from the Timisoara City Hall and the universities. With young people like this, the future of planning and design in Timisoara looks bright.

For the final word on Bega Day, let us hear from one of the organizers of the event in their own words: "I walk along the Bega as the sun goes down, thinking about the day that has just passed by. At every point along my walk is a reminder of those wonderful people who participated in the day's events: the tree where the climbing line was attached to span the Bega, the spot where chemistry students did demonstrations for all passers-by, some steps where one of the design teams did their day's work. I see a plastic bottle by the side of the path; ordinarily I might let the bottle stay there, but on World Environment Day, I decide to pick the bottle up and throw it in the trash can. As I turn back towards the Bega, having done my small part to improve the canal, I think about how to preserve the great spirit that we have seen here today. I think about the future events that we will do to continue the work we have started. I think about how lucky Timisoara is to have a group of people who care so much about its future. And I think that, sooner or later, our work will be successful, because in Timisoara, every day is Bega Day."

Bega Day - 5 iunie/June 5 - Azi, redescoperim Bega/Today, we rediscover the Bega

Locuitorii României au dreptul la arhitectură şi peisaj, la fel cum au dreptul la sănătate şi justiţie.

Bega este un bun al oraşului iar Timişoara ar trebui să fie tutelată de prezenţa sa. Accesul la apă, la peisaj este un datum fizic al tuturor locuitorilor. Într-o lume în care problemele de mediu devin tot mai stringente, omul contemporan trebuie să-şi reconsidere atitudinea faţă de ambient. De aceea se vrea interacţiunea directă cu locuitorii oraşului în încercarea de a-i convinge asupra faptului că Bega este un important obiectiv turistic, cultural şi ambiental.

Urmărind toate aceste idei a luat naştere ,,Bega Day", un eveniment maraton care se va derula pe parcursul unei zile. În acest răstimp se vor desfăşura în mod concomitent o serie de evenimente care au rolul de a aduce Bega in conştiinţa locuitorilor oraşului.

Astfel, vor avea loc expoziţii de fotografie pe podurile cele mai tranzitate din oraş, Michelangelo (B-dul Michelangelo lângă Complexul Studenţesc) şi Tinereţii (B-dul Mihai Viteazul). Pe parcursul a opt ore studenţi de la arhitectură, peisagistică şi artă vor încerca să rezolve probleme punctuale de urbanism în cadrul unui workshop privind reabilitarea canalului Bega. De-alungul malurilor râului, în Parcul Rozelor, studenţi de la mecanică, chimie, peisagistică, şi reprezentanţi de la GTZ vor încerca să evidenţieze problemele de mediu cu care se confruntă oraşul în general şi Bega în special prin intermediul unor standuri tematice. Studenţii de la Facultatea de Mecanica vor prezenta laboratorul mobil de analize de mediu iar studenţii Facultăţii de Chimie Industrială şi Ingineria Mediului vor prezenta o serie de demonstraţii de analiză a apei.

Unul dintre standuri va avea o tematica precisa: ,,Ce este un PUG?" (Plan Urbanistic General). Direcţia de Urbanism a Primăriei este angrenată în elaborarea unui nou Plan Urbanistic General, formularea acestuia fiind echivalentă cu generarea unei matrici legale pentru tot ceea ce înseamnă cadru construit în oraş. În acest sens trecătorii şi participanţii la eveniment vor avea ocazia să sesizeze problemele de urbanism din oraş şi în acelaşi timp să se informeze despre ceea ce presupune un PUG.

Simultan vor avea loc întreceri şi demonstraţii de kayac şi canotaj. Pentru a marca metaforic necesitatea podurilor pietonale, trecerea peste Bega se va putea face prin tiroliană sau bac.

În încheierea workshop-ului de urbanism vor avea loc o serie de prezentări legate de oraş şi apă pe scena din Parcul Rozelor sau la Atelierul de Urbanism, str. Alba Iulia nr. 1 în funcţie de vreme. Câteva dintre personalităţile locale printre care şi Arhitectul Şef al oraşului vor vorbi despre statutul emblematic pe care îl are Bega pentru Timişoara.

Tot evenimentul va fi finalizal printr-un concert de muzică rock şi jazz pe scena din Parcul Rozelor.

The Bega Canal is an asset for the city of Timisoara, and every citizen should be mindful of its presence. Access to the water and its surrounding landscape is a fundamental right of every inhabitant of Timisoara. In a world where environmental problems are becoming more and more serious, people must reconsider their attitudes towards their surroundings. In this spirit, citizens of Timisoara should realize that the Bega Canal is an important touristic, cultural, and aesthetic resource.

From this idea, "Bega Day" was born. Bega Day will comprise a series of events designed to raise the level of awareness on the part of citizens of Timisoara about the Bega Canal.

Expositions of photographs will be held on the busiest bridges of the city, Michelangelo (B-dul Michelangelo near the Student Complex) and Tineretii (B-dul Mihai Viteazul). Over the course of 8 hours, students of architecture, landscape architecture, and art will try to resolve planning and design problems associated with the Bega Canal though a series of workshops. Along the banks of the Bega, students of mechanics, chemistry, landscape architecture, and representatives of GTZ will operate information stands that present the environmental problems that confront Timisoara in general and the Bega in particular. Students from the School of Mechanics will present a mobile environmental analysis laboratory and students from the School of Industrial Chemistry and Environmental Engineering will present a series of demonstrations of water analysis.

One information stand will have the theme: "What is a PUG?" (General Urban Plan). The Department of Urbanism of the Timisoara City Hall is currently in the process of developing a new General Urban Plan; this plan acts as a legal framework for all development that takes place in the city. At this stand, passers-by and event participants will have the opportunity to discuss urban planning issues of the city and to learn about the new General Urban Plan.

At the same time, the boating clubs of Timisoara will hold demonstrations on kayaking and canoeing. To demonstrate metaphorically the need for pedestrian bridges, it will be possible to cross the Bega on a ropes course or a pontoon bridge.

At the conclusion of the urbanistic workshops, a series of presentations will be held relating to the themes of the day on the stage in Parcul Rozelor or at the Atelierul de Urbanism, str. Alba Iulia nr. 1, depending on the weather. Some local experts, including the Chief Architect of the city, will speak about the importance of the Bega Canal to Timisoara.

The event will be concluded with a concert featuring rock and jazz music on the stage in Parcul Rozelor.

Salutare tuturor!  Bine ati venit la prima editie a Blogului-Bega.  Acest blog exista ca sa informeze persoanele interesate de imbunatatirea Canalului Bega in Timisoara, Romania.  Blogul va furniza informatii despre canal si un program al evenimentelor care vor promova raul si importanta lui pentru Timisoara.  Echipa Bega Blog este constituita dintr-un grup international de arhitecti, urbanisti, peisagisti, si ingineri condus de Directia de Urbanism a Primariei Timisoara.

Canalul Bega are potentialul de a revitaliza orasul Timisoara, dar un program de reabilitare este necesar si stringent.  Echipa Bega Blog crede ca participarea comunitatii este o componenta esentiala a unui program reusit de revitalizare.  Comunitatea Timisoara care va beneficia de revitalizarea Canalului Bega trebuie sa aiba un rol mare in determinarea viitorului acestuia.

Hello everybody!  Welcome to the first-ever edition of the Bega Blog.  This blog exists to inform and connect people who are interested in improving the Bega Canal in Timisoara, Romania.  It will provide information about the canal, as well as a program of events scheduled to raise awareness about the canal and its importance to Timisoara.  The Bega Blog team is made up of an international group of architects, urban planners, landscape architects, and engineers, led by the Department of Urbanism at the Timisoara City Hall.

The Bega Canal has the potential to help revitalize the city of Timisoara, but a program of rehabilitation must be undertaken for the city to fully exploit this asset.  The Bega Blog team believes that community participation is an essential component of any successful revitalization program.  The Timisoara community that will benefit from the Bega Canal's revitalization must play a large role in determining the future of the canal.
